301. My Guardian Dear: THE MAKING OF SAN ÁNGEL CUSTODIO

Who would think that this magnificent representation of the Guardian Angel--El Angel de la Guarda or Angel Custodio---was fashioned from old santo parts and new pieces by the noted restorer, Dr. Raffy Lopez?

A decade ago, a close friend of mine, Robby Tantingco, discovered the wonderful world of santos. As he was connected with Holy Angel University for many years, he explored the idea of having a santo of the Holy Guardian Angel, the patron of the school.

1830s heirloom image of the Holy Angel

In fact, the university chapel houses the 1830 wooden image of  San Angel Custodio, which once belonged to the founder of Angeles, Don Angel Pantaleon de Miranda. The image—which shows the Guardian Angel holding the hand of a child, was passed on to a series of descendants, until it was inherited by Juan D. Nepomuceno (1892-1973), Don Juan was inspired to name the school he founded after the Guardian Angel, hence--Holy Angel University, now the largest university in Central Luzon.

The representation of the angel protecting children is common in Catholic imagery. In art, the Guardian Angel is shown with his right arm raised, with a finger pointing heavenward; he holds the hand of a child with the other.

However, images of the Holy Guardian Angel are seldom seen in the Philippines. Thus, the choice to have a San Angel Custodio as my friend’s first santo, was both appropriate and perfect!

ANTIQUE IVORY HEAD, originally, for a Marian virgin

It was serendipitous that I just bought an antique ivory head of a Virgin. Without a wig, the ivory head with glass eyes looked rather androgynous—just like the way that angels are represented. I convinced the first-time collector to invest on an ivory image for his very first santo, and I volunteered to supervise its reconstruction.

Off to Dr. Lopez the antique ivory head went, the only piece he would work with, at the start of the project. Guided by a picture of the original Holy Angel school image, he decided to make an ivory image copy of it.

First, all the ivory parts missing were ordered for the Angel (a pair of hands)  and the Child (ivory head and hands), all made with pre-ban ivory. These were assembled on wooden manikin bodies, and when done, the Angel stood 12.5” tall and the Child, 6” high.  The Angel only had to be retouched to make it look a bit  masculine, while the Child’s features were painted.

Meanwhile, the satin vestments were created, also inspired by the original. The Angel wore a full-length, belted tunic with floral gold thread embroidery, while the Child’s was blush peach. New wigs, and metal accessories—including the highly detailed silver-plated brass wings (copied from an old San Vicente Ferrer)—were sourced from local metalsmiths.

The mortar-shaped base with an oval top was a more stylized version of the antique silver base of the original school image. The cloud designs were hammered (‘pukpok’) on brass panels, that were then silver-plated and attached to the wood base.

When the costumed images were staged and finally set on the base, the result was a new, beautiful San Angelo tableau, which, though not 100% antique, is definitely worth as much for the new santo owner, what with the amount of effort, care,  and labor of love that went into its making.  Ever this day, his very own Angel Custodio will certainly be by his side—to light and guard, to rule and guide!

71. THE ANGELS OF ANGELES

El Pueblo de los Ángeles (The Town of the Angels) owes its name to its patron saints, Los Santos Ángeles de los Custodios (Holy Guardian Angels), and the name of its founder, Don Ángel Pantaleón de Miranda, who, together with his wife Doña Rosalia de Jesus, created a new settlement out of Culiat, a forested area north of San Fernando, in 1796. On December 8, 1829, it finally became a separate municipality. The center of worship of Angeles is the Santo Rosario Church, completed in 1897. To pay homage to their patrons, several residents commissioned images to be carved, and they remain in existence today, surviving wars, natural calamities and the passage of time.

SAN ANGELO CUSTODIO
The image of the guardian angel was finished in 1830 and was passed on by the founders of Angeles to the succeeding heirs and descendants. It is currently under the care of Teresita Nepomuceno Wilkerson (handed down by father Juan Nepomuceno, founder of Holy Angel University), and is enshrined at the Holy Angel Chapel at the university grounds. A guardian angel is an angel assigned to protect and guide a particular person or group. The belief that God sends a spirit to watch every individual was common in Ancient Greek philosophy and the idea also appears in the Old Testament, although it is not specifically articulated. In Matthew 18:10, Jesus says of children: "See that you do not look down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven". The 48 in. antique wooden image was recently restored in 2006.

SAN GABRIEL ARCANGEL
Gabriel's name means 'God is my strength'. Gabriel is the Angel of child conception or the process of adopting a child, also the Angel of resurrection, mercy and peace and benefactor of " messengers". He is the patron of all who work in the field of communications. postal workers, and clergy. This image dates from 1916, with Jose Sanchez as the original owner. The heirs of Vicente Henson now take care of this almost-century old image.

SAN MIGUEL ARCANGEL
Michael's name means 'He who is like God' or 'He who looks like God' He is the leader of the Archangels, he is the Angel of protection, justice & strength. The antique image shows San Miguel in his traditional representation--awe-inspiring with his silver wings, holding a sword and a scale to weigh the souls of men. He tramples the Devil underfoot. Also from 1916, the original owner was Roman Evangelista who bequeathed it to Francisco and Domingo Evangelista.

SAN RAFAEL ARCANGEL
Rafael's name means 'God heals' or 'God has healed' based upon the Hebrew word, Rapha, which means 'doctor' or 'healer' Rafael is a powerful healer of physical bodies, both for humans and animals. He is the Angel of Love, Joy and Laughter, the Patron Angel of all those in the field of Medicine. The fish is San Rafael’s primary attribute, in reference to his instructing his young traveling companion, Tobiah, to use the liver of a fish to cure the blindness of Tobit, Tobiah's father. This image was made in 1915, commissioned by Mariano V. Henson and passed down to Januaria and Manuela Lacson.

47. Santos de Marfil: WINGED SAINTS

From the workshop of Dr. Raffy Lopez comes these ivory santos, mostly antique ivory pieces, recovered and restored into new images--complete with silver wings! From San Vicente Ferrer, the Archangels to seraphims, these santos are ready to fly high again!

SAN RAFAEL ARCANGEL (from Raphael, "God has healed") is depicted holding a fish in reference to his instruction to his young travelling companion, Tobias, to use the liver of a fish to cure his father's blindness. He is also depicted with a pilgrim's staff.

SAN VICENTE FERRER, was a famous Dominican preacher who converted thousands to Christianity in Spain due to his impassioned sermons. His attributes include a book, a trumpet and a flame on his head. As he emphasized penance to prepare men for judgment, he was also known as the "Angel of the Apocalypse", hence is shown winged.

ANGEL CUSTODIO, the Guardian Angel, a concept known as early as the 5th century, is traditionally depicted holding the hand of a child as a gesture of protection.

18. Santo Stories: HOLY GUARDIAN ANGEL, TITULAR PATRON OF ANGELES, PAMPANGA

Don Angel Pantaleon de Miranda (ca. 1765) , together with his wife, Dña Rosalia de Jesus, founded the town of Culiat in the year 1829. Culiat was renamed Angeles, dedicated to the Los Santos Angeles Custodios (The Holy Guardian Angels, or its singular Holy Guardian Angel or Holy Angel). Thus, Holy Angel became the titular patron saint of the new town while Our Lady of the Holy Rosary (La Naval) was declared as the patron saint.

Both images were commissioned and finished in the year 1830. After the death of Don Angel, the image of the Holy Angel was taken by his son-in-law, Don Mariano Henson (ca. 1798-1848, Doctor of Laws, married to Juana Ildefonsa de Miranda), who later passed it on to Maria Agustina Henson (1828-1905), who later married Pio Rafael Nepomuceno (1817-1858 ).

The image was handed down to son Juan Gualberto Nepomuceno (1852-1923), who, in turn passed it on to son Juan D. Nepomuceno (1892-1973), founder of Holy Angel University.

It is said that it was this image that inspired Don Juan to name the school that would become the biggest university of Central Luzon. Don Juan’s daughter, Teresita N. Wilkerson (1929-)took care of the image after his father’s death.

Today, it is the Holy Angel University that is the designated caretaker of this treasured image. The Holy Angel, about 48 inches tall, stands side by side with the two-foot Child he is protecting. His antique silver accoutrements include a flowered tiara, beaten wings and a cloud base in the shape of a half-orb, made during the time of Augustinian Fr. Guillermo Masnou, parish priest of Angeles.

It was last restored in 2006 by Apalit carver, Nicolas Lugue under the supervision of Mr. PJ Nepomuceno, grandson of Don Juan Nepomuceno and an antique santo collector of note. He also had a new set of vestments made for the tableau, using recovered gold embroidery from an antique santo cape, ably put together on velvet fabrics by Sasmuan bordadero and vestment maker, Ely Mangalindan. The image stayed in a small chapel housed in one of the school buildings.

In 2010, a magnificent chapel for the University was completed, and there, inside the main niche of a gothic altar carved by Spanish-trained carver Willy Layug, the Holy Angel now reposes, a grand and permanent home for a historic icon, one of the most beautiful and most important relics of the city of Angeles.

PRAYER TO THE HOLY ANGEL
My Good Angel, God has sent you to take care of me. Shelter me under your wings, lighten my path and direct my steps. Do not leave me, stay near and defend me against the spirit of evil. But above all, come to my help in the last struggle of my life. Deliver my soul so that with you, it may praise, love and contemplate the goodness of God, forever and ever. Amen.

Angel of God My Guardian dear
To whom God’s Love

Entrusts me here

Ever this day
Be at my side
To light and guard

To rule and guide
.
Amen
